Abbruzzo

Abbruzzo
Abruzzo is made up of the capital Aquilaand various provinces such as Pescara, Chieti e Teramo.

The first traces of human establishment go back to the Palaeolithic Age; in ancient times, during the Iron Age, the region was inhabited by Italic populations as the Sabini, Piceni, Equi, Vestini, Marsi, Peligni and Frentani.

Similar to Molise, the region was conquered by the Romans after the Sunnite Wars and, in the Imperil Age, became the 4th Roman Region (the Sabina Samnium).

With the dissolution of the empire and the coming of the Longobard Empire, Abruzzo became a part of the potent dukedom of Spoleto.

From the mid 9th century, the region was given as a feud to the king of Sicily Guglielmo I from the pope. Therefore the region paralleled the outcomes of the reigns of Sicily, Naples and of the Two Sicilies. Then, in 1860, Abruzzo became a part of the new born Kingdom of Italy, thanks to the Spedizione dei Mille by Garibaldi and to the intervention of Piedmont.
In 1963 , Abruzzo separated from Molise , and the two regions were established with their respective capitals, Aquila and Campobasso.
