Giovanni Verga House

Giovanni Verga House
Giovanni Verga was a great writer who portrayed Sicily in its raw, generous and tragic aspects as he saw it, and experienced it, from his lucid, attentive and critical point of view.
The reality of the sciara, the mine of the unfortunate Rosso Malpelo, the wild and diabolical beauty of the eyes of Lupa, the tragic social, emotional and existential contrasts of the rich and lonely Mastro don Gesualdo, the generous humanity and strength of stones, the sea and the people of the Casa del Mandorlo in the saga of the Malavoglia are unforgettable images of his creation.
The legacy of Verga’s work lies in the power of literature which renders daily realities eternal, when touched by the pen of a genius.
Verga remained for many years in Catania, where he died in 1922. In his city home, which was made a national monument in 1940, many mementos connected to the great Verist are on display. Free of charge.
