Officially, this event was born in 1873 around coffee tables in this Tuscan town which, at that time, was busy with the reclamation works taking place in the area while the future city was being shaped.
This carnival, which enjoys the moments of joy typical of this type of manifestation, is distinguished by the controversial nature of the allegorical floats that have become its symbol, inviting careful reflection regarding the themes despite the festivities.
The town is lively throughout year: in summer thanks to the numerous tourists who flock to the beaches and bathing establishments of Viareggio, and in winter there’s Carnival with its parades and various festivities among the local neighbourhoods.
