The two very rare ponds of Doberdo of Pietrarossa are small, but very important for geological and naturalist purposes. In fact, they are part of the regional nature reserve (of the Dobero and Pietrarossa ponds), a protected area that includes 730 acres, established in 1996 to protect these two very rare Carsic depressions.The animal and plant life are very interesting because of the influence of the two affluent rivers (the Isonzo and the Vipaccio) on the aspect of the ponds in various periods. Both animals and plants are very resistant to these variations and do not suffer from it.
Around the ponds (being very careful to avoid the numerous reptiles such as the deadly viper), you may see rare aquatic birds.
