Sant’Angelo in Grotte is a municipality in the province of Campobasso and is a part of the mountain community of Matese. The elevation of this location (1000 m) and its surrounding forests and relaxed environments make it one of the best places to let your mind clear and your soul breathe.
This spiritual location, which overlooks the valley of Bojano, is known for its famous caverns that are related to the figure of the archangel Michael. They say, in fact, that he actually made these caverns his home because he loved this place so much, therefore the area is called Sant’Angelo (Saint Angel). It is also said that he flew from here to Gargano where he gave the name to mount Sant’Angelo, one of the most ancient sanctuaries in Europe.
The mountain community of Matese has organized a huge forest area (400 acres) furrowed by the Rio Paradiso river and many trails.
