Molise by horse

Molise by horse
These livestock tracks were built by the Sanniti civilization and were considered the best ways for communication and transport before construction of the Roman roads.
The livestock tracks and the established roads were maintained and supervised by the barbaric invaders and later by the Roman conquerors. These tracks were very wide, usually between 12 and 30 meters in width, but sometimes even up to 100 m. They were kept secure and efficient during Medieval times by the communes around the region, since they had become the principle routes. All the great centres in Molise were born near these tracks, such as the two main towns of the province of Molise.
Today it is fascinating to ride along these ancient tracks which, since 1997, have become a protected area within the Tratturi park.
