The park stretches for about 36,400 hectares over the Tuscan-Romagna Apennine mountains; the highest point is Monte Falco at 1658 metres. Lush forests predominate (more than 80% of the total area). Within the park there is the Camaldoli hermitage and the della Verna sanctuary, both important cultural, spiritual and historical centers. Abundant water flows through the park (the source of the Arno river, Acquacheta waterfall), the flora is various and lush, and there is much diversity with regard to birds, amphibians and hoofed animals. The presence of the wolf and the return of the golden eagle are worth mention.
